- Story Text: Members of the feminist art collective Pussy Riot, popularly known for its colourful punk protests against Russian authorities, joined Iranians in the stands of the country's World Cup match on Tuesday (November 29) to mark the civil unrest that has gripped Iran since the September death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in police custody.
The Pussy Riot members wore shirts emblazoned with "Woman Life Freedom" on the front and names of women believed to have been killed during the unrest on the back.
They said that security at Al Thumama Stadium had asked them to remove their trademark balaclavas, but not the t-shirts.
A film-maker working with Pussy Riot in Qatar, Jaka Bizlij, told Reuters that members of the group, as well as his assistant, had been challenged by security at the gates of the stadium over t-shirts they wanted to bring into the ground.
Pussy Riot outraged Russian authorities in 2012 by donning vivid-colored balaclavas and belting out an anti-Putin "punk prayer" in front of the gold-framed icons of a Moscow cathedral.
Four of their members also protested during the World Cup final in Moscow in 2018, running on to the pitch dressed as police officers.
Other photos taken during the United States-Iran match showed Iran fans wearing t-shirts which spelled out the name of Mahsa Amini, and security personnel approaching those involved. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
