- Story Text: Argentina soccer fans were chanting and cheering while watching Monday's (December 5) Japan v Croatia match, not inside a stadium but at a local Qatari majlis.
Qatari Khalid Al Binali hosts soccer fans from all over the world at his majlis, a gathering place by his house where he serves them free food and drinks. They can also watch matches on a big screen.
His son Abdullah said because their house is located next to Khalifa International Stadium people think the sitting room is affiliated with the stadium.
“They (fans) believed that this place is affiliated with the stadium but we told them that 'no, this is our place,' therefore they were fascinated by this image. We show them the Arabic and Qatari food, tea and coffee, karak (tea). We teach them our traditions and customs as well as Arabic history,†he said.
Soccer fans were eating sweets and sandwiches, drinking tea and coffee, while watching the last-16 match between Japan against Croatia. Argentina fan Costanza Reche was among them.
"This brings us the opportunity to know the culture of the country that hosts the World Cup this year. It is a great chance for us as Argentinians to know another culture so different from us," she said.
Meanwhile, the hashtag "Invite them to your Majlis" has gained traction on Twitter with Qataris sharing their hospitality online.
“As you can see there are people coming from everywhere. Our job is to show them the idea of Arabs and we want to show the West our traditions,†said Abdullah, the host's son.
