- Story Text: Sex workers and their children marched on the streets of India's eastern Kolkata city on Saturday (December 10) to demand for their rights on Human Rights Day.
With banners, placards and balloons, participants from Sonagachi, South Asia's largest red light district, and supporters raised slogans as they walked to highlight their plight and make the government and people aware.
"Firstly, the children of the sex workers should get their rights be it regarding health or education. They should also get rights of even small government or non-government schemes. They (sex workers) should be respected and sex work should be acknowledged as work," said Member, All India Human Rights Board, Yasmin.
While prostitution is legal in India, most related activities such as soliciting, pimping, and running a brothel are crimes, meaning sex workers face frequent run-ins with the police.
India's top court had recognised sex work as a profession and the people involved in the job deserved dignified life and equal protection.
Sex workers worldwide have lost work, earnings and their homes during multiple lockdowns to contain COVID-19. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
