- Story Text:Peruvians trapped in closed highways suffer as protesters take the streets on Tuesday (December 13) at Ica, southern Peru.
Demonstrators, many of them Castillo supporters, have for days demanded that Peru hold elections rather than allow Peru's current president Dina Boluarte, the country's former vice president, to stay in power until Castillo's term ends in 2026.
Recently, protesters have blocked roads, set fires, and even taken over airports.
At Ica, Juan Cordova, a truck driver transporting mangos stuck in the blocked highway, told Reuters he was worried about his cargo and that he hoped “the fruit can withstand the strike for one, two, three days†without spoiling.
He also expressed concern about his payment, as it depends on the delivery.
Other stranded truck drivers were seen sheltering from the sun on the road or resting under their trucks in the hope the roads will be cleared soon. Passenger buses were also seen stranded.
Demonstrator in support of ousted president Castillo, Richard Benavente, told Reuters protesters blocking the road with burning tyres and rocks demanded the shutting of the Congress, new elections, and freedom for Castillo.
Castillo was ousted last week after lawmakers voted to remove him following his failed attempt to rule by decree and dissolve Congress to avoid a third impeachment vote and is currently detained.
