My idea for this project was to take something we all know, that adults collected during their infancies and that children collect again today, with the idea of making visible the issue of sexual diversity in sports, beyond shedding light on social vindications each player brings brought to the court.†ROSARIO’S YAGUARETES BASKETBALL TEAM’S FLAG, MADE UP OF GAY MEN AND WOMEN (NIGHT SHOTS) VARIOUS OF YAGUARETES’ PLAYERS TRAINING (NIGHT SHOTS) VARIOUS OF PLAYERS PLAYING (NIGHT SHOT) YAGUARETES’ PLAYER JUAN IGNACIO BONACCI PLAYING GAME (SOUNDBITE) ROSARIO’S GAY BASKETBALL TEAM’S PLAYER, JUAN IGNACIO BONACCI, SAYING: “Maybe we’re missing the next (Argentina soccer star Lionel) Messi because he’s gay or bi(sexual) o whatever gender identity he may have. I think it’s very important to start to reconsider the logic underlying the spaces we’re constructing and the sport’s beauty and what it represents. As an artist, I think my work is to generate emotion and, finally, that this project would be a starting point for the audience, for those who have the book (album) in their hands, cultural institutions, social and political institutions, can work in favour of a bigger inclusion in sports.†(NIGHT SHOTS) VARIOUS OF PLAYERS PLAYING (NIGHT SHOT) BALL SHOOTED THROUGH HOOP

- Story Text: The year the World Cup is hosted in a country banning the rainbow flag, a French photographer based in Argentina sought to shed light on LGBTQI+ athletes and the issue of diversity in sports.
Emilien Buffard, a 31-year-old French artist, based in the city of Rosario, created the project “Sport Friendly: diversity in the court,†which features 500 players of different disciplines belonging to the LGBTQI+ community as if they were World Cup stickers.
Buffard told Reuters he hoped the project could create emotions and trigger an inclusion debate so that institutions work for more diversity in sports.
The project, which takes the shape of a Panini World Cup album and stickers, was released in November, coinciding with Qatar’s hosted tournament opening.
“The big World Cup loser is Qatar because it attracted the world’s attention when it organised this World Cup being a power that oppresses sexual minorities and women,†he said.
Players of Rosario’s gay basketball team Yaguaretes welcomed the initiative.
To Juan Ignacio Bonnacci, one of its members, the world could be missing the next Messi because of the lack of diversity in sports.
“We need more Emilien,†he said.
