- Story Text:Pharmaceutical companies in China on Tuesday (January 10) said they were confident of meeting the spike in demand for COVID-19-related medicines amid a surge of infections among the country’s 1.4 billion people.
Vice general manager of Youcare Pharmaceutical Group Zhang Jiang told reporters visiting his factory on a government organised tour that the company was running its production line 24/7 to ensure an adequate supply of medicines.
“We have mobilised all of our staff to work overtime,†said Zhang on Tuesday. “It is not only for now, we will continue during the Lunar New Year holiday as well, we have told our staff at meetings that they won't be given time off," he said.
Youcare said it also boosted its output of anti-fever drugs five-fold to one million boxes a day in the past month.
Another pharmaceutical company, Beijing Double-Crane Pharmaceutical Company, said it had ample production capacity.
“For products like this, we can fully meet demand by expanding production within a quarter," said Lu Wenchao, director general at Beijing Double-Crane.
China's abrupt change of course in COVID policies has caught many hospitals ill-equipped, while smaller cities were left scrambling to secure basic anti-fever drugs.
