- Story Text: "All Quiet on the Western Front" producer Malte Grunert was still coming to terms with multiple BAFTA nominations when on Tuesday (January 24) the film bagged an incredible 9 Oscar category nominations, including the coveted 'Best Picture.'
The first German film adaptation of Erich Maria Remarque's 1929 WW1 novel of the same name is also the first time a German film has been nominated in the top category "Best Picture" at the Academy Awards.
Producer Malte Grunert was overwhelmed on Tuesday.
"We had an inkling that the film reached people and it was well received and reactions in all the screenings that the director Edward Berger, our cast, myself were at, were positive and engaged, but we had no clue that that would translate into this number of nominations," Grunert said.
The film, directed by Edward Berger, depicts the devastation and horror of World War I from the perspective of a German soldier.
"All Quiet on the Western Front'... remind(s) us that it's this right-wing propaganda and nationalist lies that lead to war and makes people believe that war might be an adventure and an appropriate means to solve a conflict when it isn't an adventure, it's something that means death and destruction and suffering. And to remind us of that felt like a relevant, like a relevant message even before the war in the Ukraine," Grunert told Reuters via Zoom.
"The first film adaptation of Remarque was made in Hollywood in 1929, at a time when this film could not have been made in Germany already," the film producer explained. "The film was banned shortly after its release. Remarque's book was burnt. Remarque sort of had to flee Germany. And Hollywood became a place of refuge for so many artists that sort of had to escape from Europe. So to be even remotely connected to this tradition is something that would make us very proud," he added.
The Netflix movie is also nominated in the categories "Best International Feature", "Best Original Score" and "Best Adapted Screenplay", among others.
