- Story Text: Mexican faithful on their way to work received on Wednesday (February 22) ash cross markings on their foreheads outside a metro station in Mexico City to celebrate Ash Wednesday and mark the first day of Lent.
People queued outside the busy Insurgentes metro station as a priest applied the ashes to the foreheads of the parishioners and blessed them.
Getting the ash cross outside the station is quite helpful, said faithful Vianey Molina, who explained she didn't have enough time to go to mass.
The name Ash Wednesday comes from the practice of marking the sign of the cross with Ash on foreheads as a sign of mourning and repentance to God before the Easter period.
Mexico is home to the world's second-largest Catholic community after Brazil, but numbers of faithful are falling.
