- Story Text:A slow-moving winter storm intensified over California on Friday (February 24, 2023), triggering the first blizzard warning in parts of the Los Angeles area in 30 years and creating the extraordinary sight of snowflakes around Los Angeles County.
“It's not usual for Southern California to have this kind of weather. So it is nice because I don't have to drive somewhere to enjoy this weather. Of course, I can't go snowboarding or anything here, but I still enjoy the fresh air the snow brings. And, you know, just snow is fun,†DeAnn Blunk told Reuters.
Snow and freezing rain pushed into the Golden State from the north, where it dumped about 10 inches (25 cm) of powder on Portland, Oregon, earlier in the week. California's snow was heaviest in the Cascades, Sierra Nevada and coastal mountains.
In the northern part of Los Angeles County, children and residents enjoyed about a foot of fresh powder, but others were not as fortunate. The snowfall covered several roadways creating hazardous conditions for some commuters and having to shelter in place.
“This morning we had like a foot [or] a foot and a half of snow and I couldn't go to work. We live on top of a hill, so all of our whole road was covered in snow,†Lake Hughes resident Chaslyn Cumigad told Reuters.
This is a rare sight for the town of Lake Hughes, whose scenery usually consists of dry hilltops, heat and blue skies, was welcomed with excitement by many.
“I live where there's, like, no snow ever. Like, the only snow I've got was hail in, like, first grade. And it's pretty exciting. We've been building snowmen and then breaking them. And we were shoveling snow all day. It's pretty fun,†said 11-year-old Jeremiah Dominguez.
In Los Angeles, the city's iconic Venice Beach boardwalk was completely empty on Friday, with some businesses choosing to remain shuttered due to the heavy downpours.
