- Story Text:"On the Adamant", a documentary about a floating daycare centre in Paris for adults with mental illness, clinched the Berlin Film Festival's Golden Bear award on Saturday (February 25).
Its director Nicolas Philibert said he was deeply touched by the jury's decision to award the Berlinale's top prize to a documentary rather than a work of fiction.
"It's powerful, it's great for all documentaries, I think. It will help filmmakers who choose to make documentaries and it will help people to understand that documentary can be cinema, real cinema, not information, you know," he told Reuters after the award ceremony.
Shot over three years, the film follows life at a daycare centre aboard The Adamant, a barge moored on the right bank of the Seine, where patients and carers interact in ways that break with what Philibert sees as the dehumanisation of psychiatry.
"I hope it will help people to understand that people suffering of mental troubles are not that dangerous, are not that violent. These are cliches, cliches are unfortunately very strong and my film tries to say that these people are fragile, but they are close to us, very close to us. We share humanity, you understand? So if the film may help to understand that small message it will be great," Philibert said.
The festival's Silver Bear for best leading actor went to Sofia Otero, who plays an eight-year-old transgender child in "20,000 Species of Bees".
Austrian transgender actor Thea Ehre picked up the best supporting actor trophy for "Till the End of the Night".
"I dedicate this award to the whole trans community because we're still not where we should be. And I think we're in the right direction and this prize is for everyone," Ehre told Reuters following the ceremony.
The Silver Bear Grand Jury Prize was awarded to German filmmaker and Berlinale regular Christian Petzold for his latest film "Afire", while Portuguese director Joao Canijo received the Silver Bear Jury Prize for "Bad Living".
Canijo had two titles screening at this year's Berlinale - "Bad Living" in Competition and "Living Bad" in the sidebar Encounters section.
French cinematographer Helene Louvart was honoured with the Silver Bear for Outstanding Artistic Contribution for her work in Giacomo Abbruzzese's feature debut "Disco Boy", which was years in the making.
