"RRR," is a fictional tale based in the 1920s about two Indian revolutionaries, and their journey away from their homeland before they return to fight against British colonialism. "Naatu Naatu" from the film has won a Golden Globe and a Critics Choice Award, garnered hundreds of millions of views on YouTube and spawned a TikTok challenge. Its Oscar nomination for best original song made history as the first Indian feature film to be nominated for anything other than best international film at the Academy Awards.
"After the release of the movie ('RRR') it went viral on so many platforms like TikTok and Instagram and many other platforms,†composer M.M. Keeravaani told Reuters. “And I was also amused by the reaction coming from everywhere. But now the song getting nominated for an Oscar and this is a great feeling."
“Lift Me Up†in Marvel’s “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever†served as a tribute to the late actor Chadwick Boseman ,who portrayed character T'Challa/Black Panther in the first film.
"I had this little idea of a song that I'd been writing on for a long time, (I) actually started the very beginning of that song was in the first movie when you see T'Challa as a kid, and I knew I wanted to make something along this idea,†songwriter Ludwig Goransson told Reuters. “I brought it to (director) Ryan (Coogler) and I played it for him, and (he) asked me if he could write some words and, because I knew that how connected he is to the story and how connected he was to Chadwick. So I knew that was going to be something very intimate and special."
Songwriter and singer Diane Warren, nominated for "Applause", said the song was written for the movie "Tell It Like A Woman".
"It is seven short films about women's struggles, women's stories,†she told Reuters. “I wanted to write a really powerful song about women that go through these very struggles. At the end of the day you have got through them and give yourself some applause, which is this message that, as women we don't give ourselves enough applause.â€
“Top Gun: Maverick†sees Tom Cruise's Pete "Maverick" Mitchell return to the screen after 30 years since "Top Gun" came out. In the film, he trains a group of the best TOPGUN graduates and prepares them for a high-profile mission while he is confronting the ghosts of his past.
Song "This is a Life" comes from the dimension-hopping “Everything Everywhere All At Onceâ€. Starring Michelle Yeoh, the movie tells the story of Chinese-American laundromat owner struggling to finish her taxes amid family turmoil. Then she discovers she can traverse parallel universes as different versions of herself to save the multiverse, and possibly her family bonds.
Winners will be revealed on March 12 in Los Angeles.
