- Story Text: Open Bionics, a British prosthetics start-up company, presented the functionality of its 'Hero Arm' bionic limb in the western Ukrainian city of Lviv on Sunday (March 5).
Two Ukrainian soldiers who lost their hands and arms after being injured by landmines became the first recipients of the state-of-the-art bionic arms made by Open Bionics.
Called 'Hero Arms’, the 3D printed prosthesis, have moveable fingers and thumbs controlled through myoelectric sensors that register the electrical impulses generated by muscles.
Working together with 'Superhumans', a Ukrainian charity funding the construction of a rehabilitation center near Lviv, Open Bionics hope to deliver prosthetic limbs to thousands of people who were injured durning the war with Russia.
Joel Gibbard and Samantha Payne, co-founders of Open Bionics which developed the world’s first clinically approved 3D printed bionic hand, were named the 2018 Hottest Startup Founders in Europe, at the Europa Awards.
Twenty-nine-year-old Ukrainian soldier Andrii Gidzun lost his right lower arm in combat and presented his prosthetic implant to the public by drawing the Ukrainian flag.
"My first impression is that this is really great. I can do elementary things with this prosthesis, I can take something in my hand, like a shopping bag after doing groceries. And then my other hand is free, so I can hold mobile phone, " Gidzun said adding that he was looking forward to exchange handshakes with his friends using his right hand, as before his injury.
Superhumans Center, an orthopedic specialist clinic for the treatment and rehabilitation of war victims was built on the premises of the existing Lviv Regional Hospital of war veterans and is due to be opened in April.
The initiator of the project was Andrii Stavnitser, an Odesa businessman, the board of the clinic includes President's wife Olena Zelenska. Rock singer Sting and British billionaire entrepreneur Richard Branson are among the supporters of the project.
