- Story Text: About 300 activists marked Women’s Day with a protest near the presidential palace in Manila to urge the government to improve the labour situation of female workers.
Anti-riot police briefly blocked the activists from holding their protest in front of the palace, but were later allowed a few hundred metres from the gate leading to the compound.
Clarice Palce, activist and Gabriela Women's Party spokesperson said while the Philippines has laws protecting women, women were still being discriminated against and abused in some workplaces.
A 2022 report by the Philippine Statistics Authority said about 12,492 women in the Philippines suffered some form of abuse in 2021, with more than a quarter of the incidents being physical abuse.
