- Story Text: Cooperation agreements on climate crisis, food security and digital rights marked on Saturday (March 25) the end of the 28th Ibero-American Summit.
Representatives of the 22 countries participating at the summit held in the Dominican Republic approved the Santo Domingo Declaration, the Four-Year Action Plan for the Ibero-American Cooperation and three charters on critical issues that must be addressed together, according to the declaration.
A special statement on the need to shake up the international finance architecture was also approved.
“The proposals are focused on overcoming poverty granting food security. In the same way, there’s another proposal to face the global challenges of climate change. And considering our entrance into the virtual world, there’s a charter that proposes guaranteeing the exercise of fundamental rights in the construction of fair and egalitarian digital societies,†the host President, Luis Abinader, said in a closing news conference.
The agreements came after and hours-long meeting, which took place in a context of stubbornly high inflation and global concerns over the financial sector after the failure of U.S. regional banks Silicon Valley Bank and Signature Bank this month.
Abinader handed over the Ibero-American Summit pro tempore presidency to his Ecuadorian counterpart, Guillermo Lasso, who said the country would take the assignment with responsibility.
This year's summit discussions revolved around the rising inflation, migration, climate emergency and Haiti’s humanitarian crisis, among other issues affecting the 22.
