- Story Text:Police fired tear gas at demonstrators as a Paris pension reform protest turned tense on Tuesday (March 28).
The Paris march led by unions has largely been peaceful, but some protesters dressed in black clothing smashed the front windows of a store and started a rubbish fire on the street.
Tens of thousands marched in the streets of the French capital on Tuesday to denounce President Emmanuel Macron's push to raise the retirement age by two years to 64, which was passed in parliament without a vote.
Millions of people have been demonstrating and joining strike action since mid-January to show their opposition to Macron's plans.
Most demonstrations have been peaceful, although the presence of “black bloc†protesters in Paris protests has led to several consecutive nights of clashes with police last week.
Tuesday's protests have so far not been as violent as last Thursday's (March 23).
Macron, who promised to deliver a pensions system reform in both of his presidential campaigns, says the reform is needed to keep the country's finances in balance. Unions and opposition parties say there are other ways to do that.
