- Story Text: Comedian Sarah Silverman stars in "Jesus is Magic" which comprises her performance before a live audience interwoven with stylish musical numbers and backstage intrigue.
The stand up comedy is written by Silverman who takes on such pitch-black topics as September 11th, unwanted body hair, and the Holocaust, and spins them into decidedly un-PC comedic gold.
"A friend of mine watched the show from the wings. I did this thing with the tear (motions throwing tear drop to friend) and I flipped it off stage and he pretended to catch it and jerk, masturbate, I mean pleasure himself with it. I thought this would be a really cool movie this could be really be a visual kind of a different version of a concert movie. That is what first occurred to me," Silverman told Reuters.
Silverman, who has been compared to the legendary Lenny Bruce, is known as one of the funniest and most provocative people in comedy.
"What is off limits for me? I guess jokes about Jewish people. Because you know what? Sure I talk about Black people, Mexican people, AIDS, rape, Chinese people, September 11th but you know what? My people have been through a lot and it is not funny," said the 34- year- old comedian.
The movie is directed by Liam Lynch, a fast-rising video and film director currently in production on the feature "Tenacious D in: The Pick of Destiny", collaborated with Silverman to adapt her show to the screen.
"I hooked up with this director Liam Lynch who I feel so lucky to have gotten to him on the early tip of his career because he is just unbelievable he is such a super star. We wrote the scenes together, the kind of scenes in the movie and just visualized what the movie looked like to us. It was just fun and laughing everyday and we made this movie and we watched it and we were like this is exactly what we imagined you know, " Silverman said.
