Brazil's far-right former President Jair Bolsonaro got a hero's welcome from supporters outside his party headquarters in Brazilia on Thursday (March 30).
Bolsonaro, who left the country after losing last year's general election to leftist President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, returned three months later from the United States.
Supporters with Brazilian flags around their shoulders chanted and cheered outside the Liberal Party’s (PL) headquarters to catch a glimpse of Bolsonaro, who waved at them from a narrow window before meeting with his party’s colleagues.
Bolsonaro, who never conceded defeat in last year's election, is expected to lead the opposition to Lula, officials in PL party said.
The 68-year-old former president headed to the PL’s headquarters after landing at Brasilia’s International Airport.
Before boarding a plane in Orlando, Florida, Bolsonaro downplayed his leadership role and said he will use his experience to help his party campaign in next year's municipal elections, adding that the vote he lost in October is a closed chapter.
Bolsonaro left for the United States two days before he was due to hand over the presidential sash to Lula on Jan. 1. He said he needed rest, but critics say he was avoiding the risks of over a dozen legal investigations he may face in Brazil.
