Summary:The world's latest and most luxurious liner sailed into New York harbour at the end of it maiden voyage on May 7 1969 and received a typically tumultuous welcome from the New Yorkers. It was, of course, the Queen Elizabeth 2 which had sailed from Southampton with 1,400 passengers. The 65,863-ton vessel sailed up the Hudson River on what was officially designated Queen Elizabeth Day in New York.
