Summary:On May 13 1969 West Malaysia was on the brink of a state of emergency. Two days of clashes between Malays and Chinese in Kuala Lumpur had left a trail of burned-out cars and buses, sacked houses and looted shops and some fifty people killed. Political manoeuvres had left the Chinese, who constituted half Malaysia's population, unrepresented.
