- Story Text:Violence escalated between police and teachers during a demonstration in La Paz on Monday (April 10) against the new curriculum proposed by the Bolivian Education Ministry.
Footage shot by Reuters showed police cornering protesters, hitting them, and firing paint pellets and pepper spray at them. Authorities have not said how many people were injured.
Protesters responded by throwing fireworks at the police.
A teacher who only gave her name as Juana said the teachers only wanted to meet with the Education Ministry but were instead met with aggression.
"No to gender ideology, no to indoctrination," she added, referring to the new curriculum.
Last week, parents in La Paz complained to the Education Ministry about teachers' work stoppages in urban areas and demanded that teachers who do not work be docked pay, the Bolivian state news agency reported.
