Summary:The beginning of an ill-fated voyage saw the Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl leaving the Moroccan port of Safi in a boat made of papyrus. In May 1969, Heyerdahl and his crew of six were intent on proving that ancient Egyptians could have sailed to Central America 5,000 years previous ly. Unfortunately the craft, named Ra, foundered, although all aboard were saved.
