- Story Text: Pakistan’s capital Islamabad saw damaged police stations and dismayed residents on Thursday (May 11), a day after violent protests erupted following the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan.
“All the destruction in our country, whose loss is it? It’s our loss, and our country’s loss,†said one resident and newspaper vendor, as containers were being moved near Islamabad police lines headquarters to further fortify the facility holding Khan in custody.
Khan's arrest by the anti-graft agency on Tuesday (May 9) has triggered violent protests across the country, prompting the government to call out the army to help restore order.
Tensions remained high in the nuclear-armed nation with paramilitary troops and police on the streets in major cities on Thursday. Mobile data services remained suspended and schools and offices were closed in two of Pakistan's four provinces.
