- Story Text: Thousands of migrants are crossing into the United States this week before a new regulation takes effect that could bar most who cross illegally from seeking asylum
The U.S. rolled out a regulation on Wednesday (May 10) that presumes most migrants are ineligible for asylum if they passed through other nations without seeking protection elsewhere first or if they failed to use legal pathways for U.S. entry.
The new rule is a key part of President Joe Biden's border enforcement plan as COVID-19 restrictions - known as Title 42 - are set to end just before midnight on Thursday (May 11).
In Brownsville, Texas, migrants who had been released from federal immigration custody lined up for food, provided by a local church and Team Brownsville, an organization which helps people seeking asylum.
In the long queues, there was some confusion about U.S. policy.
Nestor Villalobos told Reuters, “We all have fear. For our family, because for example, I have family that come here. In reality, we still don't understand Title 42. We don't know how it's going to be, maybe it's easier to enter here or maybe it's more complicated. In truth, we have uncertainty. We are here and we do not know what will happen."
Andrea Rudnik from Team Brownsville says those crossing the border should be made to feel safe.
“These people’s lives have been in danger. They’ve been under political oppression. They are not dangerous people. They have been in danger," she said.
