- Story Text:Hindus in northern India on Tuesday (May 30) celebrated 'Ganga Dussehra' by taking a holy dip in the sacred River Ganges in the temple towns of Haridwar, Prayagraj and Varanasi.
During the festival, devotees worshipped the holy river venerated by Hindus as a mother as well as a goddess, as the Ganges holds a uniquely significant place in Indian life and consciousness.
The Ganges is a symbol of purity for Hindus. Devotees bathe in the river and offer prayers for the well-being of their families.
"There is no bigger blessing than being able to take a holy dip in the river Ganges on Ganga Dussehra in the pilgrimage town of Varanasi," said a devotee, Ashwani Kumar.
Regarded as a celestial river originating in the heavens, the legend holds that the Ganges was gifted to mankind in answer to the great penance undertaken by king Bhagirath, after whom she is also called Bhagirathi. Bhagirath, a descendant of the legendary Sagara dynasty, prayed for the Ganges to descend onto the parched earth and bring life. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
