- Story Text: Hundreds of members of Zapatista communities and their supporters marched in Mexico City on Thursday (June 8) to demand the government do more to stop a wave of violence affecting their indigenous region.
These protesters are demanding an end to violence they say is being waged against the Zapatista National Liberation Army, or EZLN, who are an armed group fighting for indigenous rights in Chiapas.
Zapatista communities say the group is coming under attack from paramilitary groups in the state
"We are asking for attacks from paramilitary groups to stop... Right now they are also teaming up with organized crime groups that are holding Chiapas on the brink of a civil war," protester and sociologist Raul Romero said.
Violence in Chiapas from turf wars between paramilitary groups, cartels and local self-defense groups is happening with ‘active or passive complicity’ from Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador and Chiapas governor Rutilio Escandon, a statement from the National Indigenous Congress (CNI) read.
The statement, signed by people such as Noah Chomsky and Mexican actor Diego Luna, also denounces the serious health situation of a Zapatista member following an attack by a paramilitary group justice and demands justice.
