- Story Text: India's opposition leaders on Saturday (July 29) visited northeastern state of Manipur, which has become a symbol of a vicious sectarian conflict that has killed over 180 people since May.
The delegation of newly formed bloc of 26 opposition parties, I.N.D.I.A alliance, visited relief camps in Manipur's Churachandpur, which has seen a number of violent incidents.
Manipur, which borders Myanmar, is one of India's smallest states with a population of 3.2 million. While Kukis are just 16% of the state's population, Meiteis make up 53% of the people.
The violence began after a court ordered the Manipur state government to consider extending special economic benefits and quotas in government jobs and education enjoyed by the tribal Kuki people to the majority Meitei population as well. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
