- Story Text: Thousands of Indian farmers in northern state of Punjab on Sunday (August 06) hit the streets to protest the ethnic clashes in Manipur that has killed more than 180 people.
In Punjab's Mohali, protesters associated with Bharatiya Kisan Union (Ugrahan), one of the largest farmers' unions, marched towards the house of the state governor to submit their memorandum over the violence and sexual assault against women in Manipur.
In the national capital, protesters from Manipur's Meitei community gathered for a sit-in protest at the historic site of city's Jantar Mantar and appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to intervene and resolve the issue.
Violence erupted on May 3 in Manipur, after a court ordered the state to consider extending to the majority Meitei population special economic benefits and quotas in government jobs and education that up to now have been reserved for the tribal Kuki people. - Copyright Holder: ANI (India)
