- Story Text: England fans celebrated outside the Brisbane Football Stadium on Monday (August 7) after their penalty shootout victory over Nigeria.
The teams remained scoreless at the end of extra time, but England pulled through with a 4-2 win on penalties.
England played with 10 women through extra-time after forward Lauren James, their top scorer with three goals in the group stage, was sent off in the 87th minute for an ill-tempered stamp on the back of Michelle Alozie after the two went down in a tangled heap.
Despite Nigeria’s loss, fans were still proud of the teams progression past the group stage, the third time in the country’s history.
England will play either Colombia or Jamaica in the quarter finals in Sydney on Saturday (August 12).
