He thought that I would not be able to perform a solo performance of one of (late Egyption singer) Um Kolthoum works by playing on Qanun. - Story Text: A Jordanian all-female musical group aims to empower women through music and highlight their talents, according to musical teacher and artist Rula Jaradat who founded the group 12 years ago.
Dubbed “Nayaâ€, the group comprises of 12 women between musicians and singers.
Jaradat, who is also president of the group, said the idea was born out of a challenge with a man colleague "who underestimated her" in a solo performance.
She described the music scene in Jordan as "male-dominated" but said she recently started noticing more women studying music at universities.
Lina Saleh, one of the group’s members, expressed her excitement about Naya, adding that the group provided her with a space to achieve her dreams.
Naya, which mainly performs heritage songs and music, has participated in shows across the Kingdom as well as in Arab and European countries.
Jaradat said they aim "to reach the United States" and are planning to have courses that teach women music, and in the future establish a choral affiliated with Naya.
