- Story Text: Supporters of Donald Trump are unlikely to engage in organized violence at a Georgia courthouse where the former president may soon be indicted, an analyst told Reuters on Monday (August 07), despite high security at the court.
Law-enforcement officers surrounded the Fulton County courthouse on Monday in downtown Atlanta, amid closed roads and traffic barriers, as county District Attorney Fani Willis wraps up a probe of attempts to overturn his 2020 election defeat in the politically competitive state of Georgia.
Duke University professor David Schanzer, who directs the Triangle Center on Terrorism and Homeland Security, told Reuters that while organized unrest like that which occurred on the January 6, 2021 storming of the U.S. Capitol looks unlikely, heated political rhetoric may increase the chances of individual acts of violence.
If Trump is indicted, it would be the fourth time since March he was criminally charged. On Friday (August 4) he has lashed out against the prosecutors who have brought action against him, accusing them of political bias.
"IF YOU GO AFTER ME, I'M COMING AFTER YOU!" Trump wrote on his Truth Social site.
