It will be two years on Tuesday (August 15) since the Taliban swept to power in Afghanistan, seizing the capital Kabul with a speed and ease that took the world by surprise.
This timeline chronicles the key moments that followed, from the desperate bid by tens of thousands to flee the country alongside a rapid U.S. withdrawal, to the slow degradation of women's freedoms and rights.
Continued security challenges posed in particular by Islamic State remain, with public places such as mosques, education centres and markets regularly being targeted by suicide bombers. But security has, on the whole, improved.
Some Afghans have welcomed that change, but people are still struggling with poverty, drought, malnutrition, and the fading hope among women that they will have a decisive role in the country's future.
The Taliban's takeover in 2021 followed a 20-year insurgency against U.S.-led forces.
