- Story Text: Nineteen children and teenagers between the ages of 12 and 19 in Madagascar's capital Antananarivo were recently introduced to the world of movie making, during a one week workshop where young people were taught about video techniques and story telling.
The initiative, known as the "The OneMinutesJr" run by children's agency UNICEF, aims to give a voice to young people especially those from poor backgrounds where they are given cameras to produce a minute video depicting their daily lives.
This yaer's theme, "Urban living" encourages young peopel to talk about the challenges they face living in built up areas.
During the five day workshop, children had a chance to work on storyboards, shoot video and take part in the editing process.
The short films were then screened at a gathering for all the participants.
18-year-old Georgette Lantoniaina Fanomezanjanahary is amongst the participants who are eagerly awaiting to view their movie.
Like many of the participants, video making and broadcasting was novelty for Fanomezanjanahary but with the training from the workshop, she quickly picked up the process and showed surprising imagination.
Fanomezanjanahary who is deaf describes what inspired her movie, "Giving Chance".
"My name is Lanto and in my film, I tell the sotry of a young deaf person whose dream is to become a dancer, and who in the end manages to realise her dream. This film allows me to show to people that deaf people have talent and that they are capable of realising their dreams," she said.
16 year old Lejandry Randrianasolo's film, "It's like that in my neighbourhood", depicts the lives of idle youth in poor neighborhoods of Antananarivo, who succumb to a life of pick pocketing and violence.
"I am very happy to have participated because for example before, we had never touched a camera, and that really made me happy because today I can use a camera, we have learned how to film and many other things. But it has also helped us discover many other things and discover new things," he said at the screening of his film.
According to UNICEF, this initiative not only allows young people to learn new skills, but it also encourages them to voice their dreams and concerns on a public platform.
"The goal of this project is to give children and young people a voice. You know that in the convention for children rights it is stated that children have the right to express themselves to actively participate in public life. We have given a voice to children, especially underpriviledged chidlren," said Daniel Timme, head of the media section and external relations, UNCEF Madagascar.
The children's films will also be screened internationally by the team behind "OneMinutesJr", as well at the 7th Short Films festival in Antananarivo later this month. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
