STORY:
Adam Sandler, Jennifer Garner and the cast of "Men, Women and Children" talk about their personal relationships with social media and technology at the Los Angeles film premiere on Tuesday (September 30) evening.
The film follows multiple members of a small Texas suburb and exposes their relationship with different forms of technology, from smartphones to the internet to video games. Each character demonstrates how social lives are shaped and changed by social media.
Sandler says you just have to learn when to disconnect.
"It's good to get an email and tell you where to meet and not have to talk to someone, it's fun not talking to people. I like that a little bit. I wish my mother would email me on occasion but she still likes to talk. Yeah, it depends. If you're with you're kids and they're having a conversation with you and you keep looking down at the phone and checking the baseball scores that's not a good thing," says Sandler.
Garner says that while she already distances herself from social media, she has become more aware of how connected she really is to technology.
"It just isn't something that I'm interested in. As far as social media, you know, the last thing I want is to put stuff about me out there, it's so boring. But, it has made me more mindful of how much I have my phone in my hand and particularly when I'm with my kids and that And that I can kind of feel like I'm present but still be getting work done and I've been trying much more to isolate my phone time or email time and my kid time," says Garner.
Even director Jason Reitman has become self-conscious of how attached he is to his phone.
"I don't know, I think if there was an app that told me how many hours I spend looking at my phone it would probably be a little scary," says the Reitman.
The film features a large cast of younger actors including Ansel Elgort from recent young adult films "The Fault in Our Stars" and "Divergent" and Elena Kampouris, who previously worked with Reitman on "Labor Day."
"Men, Women and Children" will have a limited release on Friday, October 3rd.
