- Story Text: Muslims celebrate the 'Mawlid al-Nabi', or the birthday of Islam's Prophet Mohammad, in the Tunisian city of Kairouan on Tuesday (September 26), which witnessed an influx of visitors to partake in the religious occasion.
Music and 3D-mapping shows were all part of the festivities in the city, which holds a historical significance as one of north Africa's principal holy cities, according to UNESCO.
"This is (pure) joy. I experienced new sensations. It's the first time I've witnessed such a turnout. It's something new, and a first for us," said Tunisian worshipper, Maha Sabbah.
The 'Mawlid' is annually celebrated by Muslim countries on the 12th day of Rabi al-Awwal, the third month of the Islamic calendar, marking the birthday of the Prophet Muhammad who was born in Mecca in Saudi Arabia in 570 AD.
