- Story Text: A leading member of Nairobi's Sikh community is spearheading a drive to prevent the threatened closure of a home there housing 60 destitute children.
Mr. H.S. Chawler, a prominent Nairobi businessman, is discussing with other members of the local Sikh community plans for raising funds to save the Mama Ngina children's home, which has run out of money. A spokesman for the home -- named for Kenya's First Lady -- said cost-of-living increases would force the closing of the home on December 31 because it could no longer care for the destitute children, some of whom are also handicapped physically.
The home was established in February, 1970, from charitable contributions, but the spokesman said that recently expenditure had exceeded donations, which were shared by all children's homes throughout the country.
Mr. Chawler said his group probably would be prepared to take over the home and keep it running if they were given "satisfactory details of the facts and real estate of accounts."
Meanwhile, the home's children were treated to what could be their last Christmas party on Monday (23 December), when Father Christmas paid his annual visit to distribute gifts.
