When the local authority in Penang, Malaysia, launched a drive to kill off the rat population, dozens of children turned rat-catcher -- all chasing a bounty of 50 cents a dead rat being offered by Penang council. And they have every chance of getting rich, since there are plenty of rats and the campaign is due to run for three months. Council workers began the operation at a municipal housing estate at Kampong Selat. Using a smoke gun, the rat-catchers drove the rats from their holes and into traps. The timing of the anti-rat drive was no coincidence. February 19 was the last day of the Chinese year. It was the Year of the Rat during which the lowly rodent had status. But when that ended, that rats' days were numbered.
