  • Story Text: Hundreds of tiny superheroes, princesses and pirates took over a Rio de Janeiro plaza on Monday (February 16), proving no one is too young to get into the Carnival spirit here.
    It was family time at the annual children's bloco, as Carnival street parties are known here, as moms and dads decked out in fancy dress, took their costumed little ones for a spin.
    A live band played children's tunes with the distinctive Carnival beat typical of the boisterous street parties Rio's Carnival is famous for.
    It was the fifth year of the children's street party known as the Largo do Machadinho, Mas Não Largo do Suquinho bloco and parents said they could not have been more pleased to have a Carnival party designed especially for the smallest of revellers.
    "Yes, it's his first bloco (Carnival street party). He's five-months-old. He's seeing how it is and he's gotta get used to it. It's his first Carnival. He hasn't been to many yet," said Julia Moreti whose son Arthur was dressed as an Arabian prince.
    Boys and girls had the run of things as they sprayed each other with foam and threw glittering confetti into the air.
    And for parents it was the perfect setting to enjoy Carnival without the worries that come with the rowdy crowds at other blocos.
    "I love it, it's always great. I come every year. My daughter has fun. It's just marvellous. It's calm, just families. Perfect," Renato Lima de Souza, who took his daughter to the party said.
    "He's loving it. He loves kids. He loves parties. He's dressed up, it's a lot of fun," another father, Candido Borges said.
    Carnival started on Friday (February 13) and will run through Tuesday (February 17) officially ending with the start of Ash Wednesday.
