Multiple bodies lay on the streets of the southern Israeli city of Sderot on Saturday (October 7), following the biggest attack by Hamas on Israel in years.
Vehicles on the streets bore bullet holes and some were still burning after the attack. Ambulances, police officers, and members of Israel's armed forces were also at the scene.
The Palestinian Islamist group Hamas launched the biggest attack on Israel in years killing at least 40 people and wounding hundreds in a surprise assault that combined gunmen crossing into Israel with a barrage of rockets fired from Gaza.
The attack marked an unprecedented infiltration into Israel by an unknown number of Hamas gunmen crossing from the Gaza Strip, and the heaviest blow for Israel in the conflict with Palestinians since the suicide bombings of the Second Intifada some two decades ago.
Sderot is just 4 km (2 miles) from the Gaza Strip and has been bearing the brunt of previous Palestinian shelling attacks.
The escalation comes against a backdrop of surging violence between Israel and Palestinian militants in the West Bank, which together with the Gaza Strip is part of the territories where Palestinians have long sought to establish a state.
