- Story Text:Israeli soldiers were on Sunday (October 8) at the site of a damaged police station seized by Hamas gunmen in the southern town of Sderot.
The Hamas fighters had overrun the Erez crossing, a high security facility that channels people entering and leaving Gaza through a tight series of controls, along with the police station and other security posts.
Israel's military, which faces awkward questions for not thwarting the attack that combined Hamas gunmen crossing the border with a heavy barrage of rockets fired from the Gaza Strip, said it had regained control of most infiltration points along security barriers, killed hundreds of attackers and taken dozens more prisoner.
Israel's Defence minister Yoav Gallant said that Israel would exact a "heavy price" for the attacks.
An army spokesman said 800 targets had been hit on Sunday in retaliation.
