- Story Text: INTRO: As a United Nations-sponsored conference in Sweden tackles the growing problem of child abuse, the Philippines has opened its first Children's Forum in a bid to give youth a say in dealing with issues which affect it.
-------------------------------------------------------------------- More than 700 schoolchildren, considered "the best and brightest" in the country, were in Manila on Thursday (August 29) for the opening of a three-day forum on the theme "What's wrong with our country?" One child made an appeal for better education, saying without it Filipino children were more vulnerable to physical and sexual abuse.
"I would like to ask President Ramos to protect the children especially my friend who is illiterate and is easily duped by foreigners who abuse him sexually," said 14-year old Gary Erasmas, one of five streetchildren attending the forum where adults are not allowed to speak.
Education Secretary Ricardo Gloria who, like all the adults in the forum, were "seen" but not "heard", said: "It is the first time that we are listening from our children because in the past, we have always been lecturing to them." The children were asked during small workshops to voice their main concerns. The issues they suggested ranged from crowded classrooms, lack of books and abusive teachers.
The children were scheduled to meet Philippine President Fidel Ramos for about two hours later on Thursday and ask questions.
Suggestions and recommendations will be put down in a document called the Manila Declaration to be read during the closing ceremonies on Friday (August 30.)
