- Story Text: Ecuadorean voters consulted by Reuters conveyed their high expectations on Monday (October 16) of the South American nation's recently elected president, Daniel Noboa, during his short term.
Noboa, 35, who quit a job at his family's sprawling conglomerate when he was elected to the national legislature in 2021, won more than 52% of the vote, beating leftist challenger Luisa Gonzalez, who had about 48%, with the initial tally nearly complete.
Voters in the capital city of Quito and the port city of Guayaquil, where Noboa originally comes from, showed hopeful expectations the new president will address the country’s declining security and fulfill his campaign pledges.
The 35-year-old business scion will fulfill a long-held family ambition when he takes office as Ecuador's president, after winning the election on promises to create jobs and bring crime gangs under control.
Noboa's truncated term will last from December this year until May 2025.
