- Story Text: Around 30 Haitian children flew into France on Friday (January 22) after their adoption was fast tracked following the devastating earthquake in Haiti on Jan. 12.
All of the children arriving at Paris Charles de Gaulle airport had been in the process of being adopted before the 7.0 magnitude earthquake, which killed up to 200,000 people and reduced much of Haiti's capital Port-au-Prince to rubble.
They were welcomed by their adoptive parents.
"It's all a bit blur, we would like things to go even faster. The head of the nursery said it was an emergency situation, she 's the one saying it, so we believe it and we think that if she is saying that we need to insist so that things get done quickly," said one woman who has already adopted a Haitian girl and is waiting on her brother.
Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, France's First Lady, was also there to welcome the children.
Concern has been expressed, however, about abandoned or orphaned Haitian youth being sent abroad to be looked after and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has said foreign adoption of Haitian children should only be considered as a last resort. - Copyright Holder: REUTERS
