- Story Text: An emotional South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu broke down in tears on Monday (July 31) as he inspected the massacre site where hundreds of Tutsis were hacked to pieces last year during the climax of Rwanda's civil war.
The Nobel peace prize winner looked at half-buried skeletons at the bombed-out church at Ntarama, preserved as a testimony to last year's slaughter, and was visibly shaken before covering his face and bursting into tears.
Church officials praying aloud attempted to comfort the Archbishop before many were overcome by emotion and began crying themselves.
The silent Archbishop then continued to inspect the sight and prayed for reconciliation and forgiveness in Rwanda.
On Sunday Tutu had visited Kigali prison, where thousands of men, women and children accused of complicity in the massacres are being held without trial.
The Archbishop expressed disgust at the appalling conditions and called for justice and an end to military impunity.
Before visiting the prison the renowned South African clergyman held a service at Kigali's main stadium.
In front of a crowd of nearly 10,000 people the Archbishop again called for reconciliation and forgiveness in Rwanda and sighted his own country of South Africa as an example for the people of Rwanda.
