- Summary: NEW YORK, NEW YORK, UNITED STATES (DECEMBER 8, 2023) (REUTERS) VARIOUS OF WREATHS DISPLAYED AT THE WREATH INTERPRETATIONS EXHIBITION AT ARSENAL GALLERY IN NEW YORK (SOUNDBITE) (English) PUBLIC ARTS COORDINATOR, NEW YORK CITY PARKS ART & ANTIQUITIES, ASH CORTES, SAYING: “These wreaths are all unique in their design and creation and their materials. So the one requirement of this exhibition is that the wreaths are made out of unique materials. So made out of materials like thumbtacks, paperclips, post-it notes, cleaning supplies, plastic bottles, recycled MetroCards, all different kinds of things.” WIDE OF WREATH INTERPRETATIONS GALLERY SIGN (SOUNDBITE) (English) PUBLIC ARTS COORDINATOR, NEW YORK CITY PARKS ART & ANTIQUITIES, ASH CORTES, SAYING OFF CAMERA: “So this wreath, titled ‘Found in New York City,’ is made of all different kinds of recycled materials. Specifically MetroCards found paper plastic bags that were cut up to make flowers.” VARIOUS OF “FOUND IN NEW YORK CITY” WREATH (BY XIOMARA MORGAN AND KATHY URBINA) DISPLAYED IN THE WREATH INTERPRETATIONS GALLERY WIDE OF WETLANDS AND CONSERVATION TEAM WREATH TITLED “SEA LEVEL RISE AND MARSH LOSS” (LEFT) AND NYC PARKS BRONX URBAN PARK RANGERS WREATH TITLED “THE WRATH OF PARKS” (RIGHT) (SOUNDBITE) (English) PUBLIC ARTS COORDINATOR, NEW YORK CITY PARKS ART & ANTIQUITIES, ASH CORTES, SAYING: “‘A Glimpse of Paradise’ is deceiving from the outside, it's supposed to look like a wasp nest, and when you look inside a whole world opens up. It's uh – the back of it is a mirror. So it reflects all of the inside of the…the… the wasp’s nest. The piece is deceivingly light-hearted looking. The artist is an illustrator. As you look inside, you begin to notice all the tombstones. Many of them with very short dates. It's bringing awareness to all the children that have passed in the recent struggles going on in the Ukraine.” VARIOUS OF “A GLIMPSE INTO PARADISE” WREATH (BY NATALJA OSADCIJA IN COLLABORATION WITH VARVARA OSADCIJA AND DENISS OSADCIJA) (SOUNDBITE) (English) PUBLIC ARTS COORDINATOR, NEW YORK CITY PARKS ART & ANTIQUITIES, ASH CORTES, SAYING: “This wreath is exceptionally complex. From the outside, it looks like a wasp nest. And from the inside, once you look inside, it's a whole entire world.” INSIDE OF “A GLIMPSE INTO PARADISE” WREATH (BY NATALJA OSADCIJA IN COLLABORATION WITH VARVARA OSADCIJA AND DENISS OSADCIJA) (SOUNDBITE) (English) PUBLIC ARTS COORDINATOR, NEW YORK CITY PARKS ART & ANTIQUITIES, ASH CORTES, SAYING: “The Bronx Rangers, their wreath is all on invasive species. And, um, there's a little, sort of, joke that they write, uh, the description that it's a wreath to accidentally take home.” VARIOUS OF NYC PARKS BRONX URBAN PARK RANGERS WREATH TITLED “THE WRATH OF PARKS” (SOUNDBITE) (English) PUBLIC ARTS COORDINATOR, NEW YORK CITY PARKS ART & ANTIQUITIES, ASH CORTES, SAYING OFF CAMERA: “Got some lantern flies here, which are invasive, as well as these porcelain berries…berries and English ivy, which is also invasive.” SOUNDBITE) (English) PUBLIC ARTS COORDINATOR, NEW YORK CITY PARKS ART & ANTIQUITIES, ASH CORTES, SAYING: “I have heard about this exhibition, like even before I began working here. I would have friends who would submit all the time. It has a reputation in itself that, you know, it's just developed over time as a tradition. It first was started in 1982, and originally it was all Parks employees that submitted. It had to be opened up to the public because of, I guess, you know, probably all the public interest in it. But yeah, I've never seen anything like it.” PUBLIC ARTS COORDINATOR, NEW YORK CITY PARKS ART & ANTIQUITIES, ASH CORTES STRAIGHTENS WREATH VARIOUS OF OTHER WREATHS ON DISPLAY AT THE WREATHS INTERPRETATIONS EXHIBIT AT THE ARSENAL GALLERY PEOPLE ATTENDING THE WREATHS INTERPRETATIONS EXHIBIT EXTERIOR OF THE ARSENAL GALLERY IN NEW YORK
