- Story Text: Revellers took to the streets of Toronto on Thursday (December 21) to mark the winter solstice - the day with the least sunlight of any on the calendar.
The three hour evening parade through the city's Kensington Market district featured live drum bands and dancing, giant puppets and roaming ensemble performers in costume, many depicting the sun or mythical creatures.
After December 21, the sun will begin to set later in the evening and rise earlier in the morning in the northern hemisphere, culminating with the "longest day" at the summer solstice in June.
The Toronto event resumed in 2022 after being cancelled during the COVID pandemic.
