- Story Text: Shanghai residents woke up Friday (December 29) to a thick blanket of fog covering China's financial hub so thick the city's major landmarks were almost invisible.
Authorities issued a yellow alert for the fog in Shanghai and suspended some ferry routes temporarily.
Some sections of highways, as well as a bridge to a container port, were temporarily closed.
China's Central Meteorological Observatory issued a red alert for fog in the country, its first since 2017, and warned that heavy fog and haze would shroud areas from Hebei province in the north to southern Shanghai for more than 24 hours.
Conditions were expected to improve from Saturday (December 30) evening, when a cold wave of air is expected to blow over the country.
