Summary:At Chappaquiddick Island, Massachusetts, on July 19 1969, a car driven by Senator Edward Kennedy plunged into the water and a girl passenger in the car was drowned. The girl was Mary Jo Kopechne, a secretary to the Senator's brother Robert. Edward Kennedy did not report the death until nine hours after the accident. What happened during that time is unclear, but the Senator was not accused of causing the death.
