U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson condemned the current migration crisis following a tour on Wednesday (January 3) along with other Republican legislators of the border near Eagle Pass, Texas, where migrants are arriving at the U.S.-Mexico border to seek asylum. At a news conference, he described the situation as "heartbreaking and infuriating," and called it a "breaking point" due to record levels of illegal crossings.
Johnson blasted the Biden presidency for its policies, that Republicans say have exacerbated the problem, calling it an "unmitigated disaster" and a "catastrophe of the president's own design."
Speaker Johnson further criticized President Biden administration for attacking officials like Texas Governor Greg Abbott, who Johnson claims has taken more action to enforce the law at the border than the federal government. He expressed outrage at the administration's legal actions against Texas's border deterrence efforts.
The number of migrants attempting to cross the U.S.-Mexico border illegally spiked in December 2023, straining resources of U.S. border authorities and receiving communities. The arrivals have receded in the past week, paving the way for the United States to reopen legal border crossings on Thursday (January 4).
U.S. and Mexican officials have agreed to strengthen efforts to curb the record migration, with Biden's cabinet scheduled to meet with Mexican leaders in Washington later in January.
