- Story Text: Surfers in northern Spain said they were worried on Saturday (January 13) about the possible pollution caused by the plastic pellet spill that has been threatening the Galician shore for a month.
The amateur surfers rode the waves of Patos beach while a little group of workers efforted to clean up the sand from the plastic balls.
Millions of nurdles, as they are also called, washed up in Spain after at least one container fell from the Toconao - a Liberia-registered vessel chartered by shipping giant Maersk - off the coast of neighbouring Portugal last month.
The plastic pellet spill has triggered concern from environmental groups and a political blame-game in Spain with the Galician government being blamed for delayed action.
