Thousands took to the streets in Duesseldorf on Saturday (January 27) to demonstrate against right-wing extremism and the nationalist Alternative for Germany (AfD) in the country's biggest wave of protests for years.
Protests across Germany have been gaining momentum after a report that some senior AfD party officials discussed policies such as the mass deportation of citizens of foreign origin at a meeting with right-wing radicals.
In their third week, protests have been organised by civil society groups and alliances together with mainstream parties, trade unions and churches.
Protesters are looking to curb support for the AfD, which is polling in second place nationally and first in the three eastern German states holding elections this year.
More generally the protesters say they are looking to wake up society so it acknowledges the danger the AfD represents.
Saturday's Duesseldorf protest was organised by anti-racism alliances 'Duesseldorf stellt sich quer' (Duesseldorf stands as a barrier) and Duesseldorfer Appell (Duesseldorf Appeal) and labour union DGB Duesseldorf.
Organisers said some 30,000 protesters had taken to the streets, local police said they had no exact figures but said there were thousands of people.
